NABJ-Tulsa annually hosts the Oklahoma Salute to Excellence Awards in Journalism to honor those who provide news coverage of the plight and successes of the African-American community and the African Diaspora.
This year’s keynote speaker is the nationally recognized author and award-winning journalist, Roland S. Martin. Martin is active in the community and makes frequent appearances on CNN as a political analyst and has his own talk show on TV One, “Washington Watch with Roland Martin.” He is also a political analyst on the nationally-syndicated radio broadcast, the Tom Joyner Morning Show, heard locally on KGTO (AM 1050).
In addition, Russell Perry of Perry Publishing & Broadcasting will be the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. As a native Oklahoman, Perry has a longstanding career in newspapers, radio and television.
Each year, the awards banquet serves as one of the main fundraisers for the organization. The money that is raised during the event helps to put on the Urban Journalism Workshop (UJW) series for students interested in becoming journalists, the NABJ-Tulsa Urban Journalism Scholarships and enrichment training for students and media professionals.
The Oklahoma Jazz Depot, the location of the event, is home of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and is a one-of-a-kind historical venue which celebrates the rich heritage of Tulsa’s years as a rail crossroads and the love of jazz. The site hosts shows featuring some of the nation’s most revered talent. It will be a night to remember.
