Oklahoma African American Educators (OAAE) Hall of Fame Established

Dr. Jimmie Lewis Franklin will begin the evening as the guest lecturer to the introduction of the Oklahoma African American Educators Hall of Fame. Dr. Franklin holds the prestigious title of Professor of History, Emeritus from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.  In 1968, he became the second African American to earn a Ph.D. in History from the University of Oklahoma.   Dr. Franklin is the author of four books: Born Sober: Prohibition in Oklahoma, 1907-1959 (1971); Blacks in Oklahoma (1980); Journey Toward Hope (1982), and Back to Birmingham: Richard Arrington, Jr., and His Times (1989) and many articles dealing with African American history.   In 1993, the Southern Historical Association elected Dr. Franklin their president. Additionally, he has accepted committee positions with the Organization of American Historians and the American Historical Association.

The event will be Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chesapeake Events Room at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Suhdi Drive, (23rd & Laird) Oklahoma City, Oklahoma73105 (Bruce Fisher 405 522-5049.  This program is free and open to the public.
